Indications

Bacterial pneumonia, footrot, bacterial enteritis, calf scour, colibacillosis, metritis, mastitis, joint ill, strangles, actinobacillosis, toxoplasmosis, pasteurellosis, streptococcal infection of horse and dog, haemorrhagic septicemia and secondary bacterial infection due to influenza, contagious coryza, foot & mouth disease (FMD), distemper.

Benefits:
  • Broad spectrum antibiotic, acts against both gm(+) & gm(-) bacterial as well as many protozoal diseases of cattle.
  • Ensures quicker absorption and distribution after administration which ensure rapid onset of action.
  • No toxicity except in cases of overdose or too rapid i.v. administration.
  • Intermittent use of Sulphadimidine reduces the chance of toxic symptoms.
  • At recommended dose, safe in pregnancy and lactation.
  • In animals, hypersensitivity to Sulphadimidine very rarely occurs.

Dosage & Administration

Sulphadimidine Injection can be administered by IM, IV, subcutaneous, intra-peritoneal route. IV administration
should be done very slowly.

Cattle, Buffalo, Horse:
  • Initial dose (1st dose): 15-30 ml/50 kg body wt.
  • Maintenance dose (2nd day onward): ½ of initial dose daily for 3-5 days.
Goat, Sheep, Cat, Dog & Rabbit:
  • Initial dose (1st dose): ½ of initial dose daily for 3-5 days.
  • Maintenance dose (2nd day onward): ½ of initial dose daily for 3-5 days.

Contraindications

Sulphadimidine Injection is contraindicated in animals hypersensitive to sulpha drugs.

Side Effects

Includes allergic rashes, diarrhoea, dehydration, debility, loss of appetite, hypogalactia, digestive disturbances in ruminants and in other species depression, nausea, vomiting, crystalluria, haemolytic anaemia.

Precautions & Warnings

In recommended dose, sulpha drugs are relatively safe and generally have no side effects. But prolonged treatment has been known to cause agranulocytosis, haemolytic anaemia and avitaminosis K. Sulphonamides occasionally cause crystalluria, particularly when urine pH is low. So adequate water intake should be ensured during treatment.

Withdrawal Period: Meat & milk can be consumed for 8 days & 3 days respectively after completion of treatment.

Store in a cool & dry place. Protect from sunlight & moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
