Indications

Flunixin is indicated for rapid relief of Pain, Inflammation & Fever in the following conditions:
  • Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD),
  • Endotoxemia,
  • Mastitis,
  • Metritis,
  • Muscular fatigue,
  • Lameness,
  • Arthritis &
  • Gout.

Pharmacology

Flunixin is a potent, non-narcotic, non-steroidal agent. It is used as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory & antipyretic drug. Flunixin blocks the production of prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzyme, modifying the inflammation reaction and blocking the transmission of pain.

Dosage & Administration

Cattle, Buffalo: 2 ml/45 Kg body weight IM/IV injection once daily; 3 days.
Dog: 0.5 ml/25 Kg body weight IM/IV injection once daily; 3 days.
Horse: 1 ml/45 Kg body weight IM/IV injection once daily; 5 days. Or as directed by the registered veterinarian.

Interaction

Avoid combining with other anti-inflammatory drugs that tend to predispose animals towards GI ulcers, such as corticosteroids and other NSAIDs.

Contraindications

Do not use in animals showing hypersensitivity to Flunixin.

Side Effects

The most-common side effects include GI ulceration, especially of the stomach and large colon. Rare side effects include kidney damage and bleeding disorders. Allergic reactions are rare but have been reported.

Pregnancy & Lactation

The effect of Flunixin Injectable on pregnancy has not been determined.

Precautions & Warnings

Flunixin should not be used in animals with active GI bleeding or ulceration and drug should be given slowly when used intravenously. NSAIDs should be avoided or very carefully used in animals with liver or kidney disease.

Withdrawal Period: Milk- 1.5 days (36 Hours), Meat- 4 days.

Overdose Effects

Overdose with Flunixin will increase the likelihood and severity of the mentioned side effects. Early signs of toxicity include loss of appetite and depression.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool and dry place, protect from light and moisture. Keep all medicines out of the reach of the children.
